Mom’s Day of Prayer 1/19/13
Washington, D.C. – Kathy Coleman, Mom’s Day of Prayer Founder
In 1995, when God radically changed my heart at a Ladies’ Retreat I knew that I was about to embark on a ‘New Journey’ in my life. One scripture I knew that I must begin to live by was – “Walk by Faith and Not by Sight.” A few years after that retreat, our two children were both diagnosed with an eye disease called Retinitis Pigmentosa. Both children have lost some of their eyesight and this disease could eventually cause blindness. A new Walk of Faith began…..
What does that have to do with MDOP going to Washington, D.C.? Everything! In 1996, is when I truly began a consistent prayer life of praying for my husband and our children, Rob and Elizabeth. Rob was a senior in High School and Elizabeth was in the 7th grade. One motto in my life is – “It’s never too late to start over!” And when my prayer life increased, life really began changing in and around me.
Knowing that our children could lose their eyesight was some of the deepest pain I have ever felt. Watching my husband go through extremely desperate times in our business that almost sent him to his grave was almost impossible to bear. Being diagnosed with breast cancer was a shock to my soul since my husband was already struggling with depression and every emotion possible because of the business issues. When my mother left this earth to be with Jesus, it left a void that hurts to this day. As each of you could share, pain either makes us bitter or better….PRAYER has made me choose – BETTER!
Our Example Matters:
My mother was a POWERFUL Prayer Warrior. I watched her pray and heard her prayers until her dying days. Her relationship with Jesus as she prayed was so childlike. I loved it! She always thanked God for the birds, food, trees, flowers, sun, rain – the things I always would take for granted. She was my example of PRAYER. She believed in the power of prayer and I am a living example of those prayers to this day.
So for me to say “Yes” to Jesus as He called me to take MDOP to Washington, D.C. the morning after the 2012 election was really not that hard. Why? Because God had begun the “walk by faith and not by sight” journey for me back in 1995. Through my prayer life, I learned that obedience needed to be at the top of my walk as a believer in Jesus Christ.
In 1995, as I began to read my Bible and pray for my husband and myself to have humility, God began working powerfully in our lives and in our marriage. We were NOT the same people after I started praying. I was learning that PRAYER WAS POWERFUL and that obedience was what God wanted from us as a couple and as individuals walking through our daily lives. We had to learn to LISTEN to God.
My only thought that morning when I heard God speak about D.C. was, “What in the world will Rod (my husband) think about another one of my crazy ideas?” Well, God took care of that because as soon as I shared about going to D.C., Rod said, “GO!” Immediately, when I arrived at work I shared with my assistant, Melinda, what God had said to my heart and the plans began.
The D.C. Journey Begins:
Of course, the negative comments came immediately:
“Do you realize that is Inauguration weekend? Do you know how many people will be there?”
“Are you going by yourself?”
“What if you get killed?”
“Are you crazy?”
“Where will you stay? The hotel rooms will be sky high!”
And these are just a few of the comments that Satan wanted to use to distract God’s Call on my life. And gladly and boldly I let Satan know that he was to get behind me!
Mel and I learned we had to have a permit to host a MDOP on the Capitol grounds. The west side of the Capitol would be used only for Inauguration festivities so we would be on a section on the east side. Section 10 is the area we asked for. Even though we did not receive the permit until the middle of December, we kept “walking by faith and not by sight” and sharing with contacts that we already had about MDOP going to D.C. God had also shown me that all 50 states were to come on board and that we should work toward at least one mom per state to host a MDOP. “All things are possible with God!”
So Mel had a map of the USA printed and we would highlight each state as they would come on board to host a MDOP. It became such a statement of God’s Power as I would update the MDOP Facebook and Twitter pages. Moms began sharing on their FB/Twitter pages about MDOP and emails came in from moms that heard from other moms all over the USA. It was a grassroot effort with an Almighty Powerful God at work through the Power of Prayer and Obedience.
As the time drew close for the MDOP, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts were the only states without a MDOP. One mom emailed me and said that she would be thrilled to adopt one of those states to pray for so actually all 50 states were covered! Moms adopted those other 3 states very quickly when I posted it on FB.
D.C., Here We Come!
So as five other precious praying moms and myself boarded the plane on Thursday, January 17, 2013, we were EXCITED that moms all over the USA were praying for us and that we would all be praying together on 1/19/13. Each mom that traveled with me had prayed and God had called them just as He called me. We each paid our own way except for Treva, our Pastor’s wife, one very precious mom of 4 and pregnant with #5. My husband felt led that Treva should go on the trip from the beginning and he said he would fund her whole trip. She spoke at the MDOP that morning and we all heard from God through her!
As many of you kept up with the D.C. journey on FB, we had the privilege of visiting our Senators and Congressman’s offices. We had the privilege of praying with some of their staff members and it was a blessing beyond words.
We also had the privilege of attending Chaplain Black’s Bible Study. He is the first black Chaplain in the history of the Senate. We were each crying as he challenged us with his message. In the midst of the 6 of us, a lady came in and sat right in the middle of our group. It was one of the strangest feelings I have ever experienced. Afterwards, our sweet Treva, the Pastor’s wife, was crying. She was unable to speak to any of us. We simply left her alone.
Later as I was talking to Treva I said to her, “You are going to think I am crazy but that woman who sat next to you…I believe she was an angel.” Treva began crying again. She had felt the same thing. No, it is not odd – It was God!
We celebrated one of our team’s bday while in D.C.. Suzy turned 50 the day of the MDOP. 50 states – Suzy was 50 – 50, 50, 50! As I later learned from Brenda Kelly, Radio Host and MDOP host, that 50 means “Jubilee, Pentecost, Freedom, Liberty” and guess what Treva is going to name the baby in her womb that attended the MDOP in D.C.? Liberty – if she is a girl and if she has a boy – Lincoln. What a heritage already for that precious child yet to be born.
The morning of the MDOP:
It was a beautiful, cold, sunny and windy morning. I could not stop crying as we took the taxi ride to the Capitol – Section 10. My heart was full of joy, anticipation, thankfulness, patriotism, holiness, and full of the blessing of knowing that the main reason I was there….was for my precious children, their spouses and our wonderful grandchildren. Their names were engraved in my heart and their faces were right there on my….iphone!
We all jumped out of our taxis like they were on fire! We basically ran to the site and put the huge USA rug on the ground. Yes, we carried it all the way to D.C. and back home. Though the rug did not look nearly as large as it did in the hotel room….but as with so many things, God was showing me so much more at that moment.
The rug was a symbol of our issues/needs in life. Sometimes we feel they are so HUGE that God could never work in those situations. But with God – the Creator of our Universe – the King of kings and Lord of lords – WITH HIM ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE! With our Almighty God – He is the one who is HUGE not our issues. He knows all and sees all and He wants us to “…not worry but keep our eyes on the prize which He has called us heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
Then the 5 moms took off prayer walking. I stood there watching them. Then I saw Merry Beth walk up to the guard who was close by at the Capitol having a conversation with him, sharing about MDOP and asking him how we could pray for him. And I saw people who were probably tourist asking the girls what we were doing. It was a beautiful picture I will never forget. I would paint it if I were a painter. It was “Going out to the ends of the earth….sharing Jesus.”
One small detail I forgot to mention…from the time we left Ft. Smith, AR we wore our MDOP buttons and our name tags which had our names and Blanketing Our Nation in Prayer on them. MANY folks – men and women – asked us where we were headed and why. Many doors were opened by God because of those two things.
Then the moms started arriving. We ran to the first 3 from North Carolina who were coming for the Inauguration, then a grandmother/mom from Arkansas who was in D.C. to help care for her grandson and her daughter came with her, then two moms from D.C. and Suzy’s friend from the area. 14 of us – it was heavenly.
But before we began the MDOP, here comes a lady in a beautiful blue coat almost running towards us. She begins to prophecy over us and this event. It was a God thing and we all knew it.
She left quickly and we never saw her again. Then we began the MDOP.
We took the quilt that my mother had made me in the 70’s. It was blue and is a huge star. When God called me to D.C. that quilt immediately came to my mind. We each took hold of a section of the quilt and held it over the rug. This was a symbol of ALL the prayers being said in all 50 states, by us in D.C. and the 5 Islands for our nation and the islands as we “Blanketed Our Nation in Prayer.” We never let go of it until the MDOP had ended.
Treva led us in song – Holy Ground and other praise songs.
Merry Beth led our opening prayer! She called down heaven for us!
Suzy prayed and introduced Treva who gave us powerful words from the Lord. We hope to get her talk on the MDOP website in the next few weeks.
Sara read Isaiah 60:1-4 from The Voice Bible:
Arise, shine, for your light has broken through!
The Eternal One’s brilliance has dawned upon you.
See truly; look carefully-darkness BLANKETS the earth;
People all over are cloaked in darkness!
But God will rise and shine on you;
The Eternal’s bright glory will shine on you, a light for all to see.
Nations north and south, peoples east and west, will be drawn to your light,
Will find purpose and direction by your light.
In the radiance of your rising, you will enlighten the leaders of nations.
Don’t be shy, don’t be doubtful; lift up your eyes and look around.
They have gathered all around you, eager to come and be close to you.
And your children will come back to this land:
Your sons from the farthest places of wandering,
And your daughters gently carried home.
We then prayed for each state and its’ leaders.
Prayed for each of you that hosted a MDOP, your families and all the moms and dads that attended a MDOP
Prayed for our Nation and its’ leaders
And we ended by praying for each of our children/spouses/grandchildren/nephews/nieces – that were represented in our group.
Merry Beth closed us in prayer. Who is Merry Beth? M.B., as I call her, is one of my dearest friends. She has been to EVERY MDOP in Ft. Smith, AR – all 16 of them. But before every MDOP, Satan would attack her in all kinds of ways and mainly something to do with her children. This year, M.B. suffered the deepest depression of her life and she told me in November that she could not go to D.C. In my heart…I knew she was supposed to go.
As I prayed, I saw God’s healing hand come over her life. She was back! And 2 weeks before going to D.C., she made her reservations to go! It was such an affirmation for me as I walked this deep, dark journey with her of the fact that God’s plans CANNOT and WILL NOT be stopped by Satan. If you look on the MDOP website and FB page, you will see the picture of M.B. with her hands raised high as she prayed. Glory to God in the Highest! Once again, GOD PREVAILED!!!
Then we went as a group to share in a time of celebration at a coffee/sandwich place close by the Capitol. This time together thrilled my heart! We laughed, we cried, we got to know each other better….we were moms/grandmothers with a common bond – PRAYER for our children, our nation and the world.
What’s Next for MDOP in 2014?
This is the question many have asked me. I do KNOW that God spoke to my heart about Israel before, during and after 1/19/13. Is God calling me to take the MDOP to Israel? I’m praying with my husband and the MDOP team about this. Please pray with us.
Why Israel? I do not know but God does. Merry Beth wrote to me a few days ago, “I already feel like Andy (her husband) and I are supposed to go to Israel, which is one reason I sense MDOP will be there next year. This is all happening in conjunction with how much conviction I felt from the Holy Spirit to end the prayer time at our Capitol for the entire world. “
Walking by Faith and Not by Sight:
That is where I am….Walking with Jesus by Faith in Him and not by My Sight. As time goes by, I will update you on MDOP for 1/18/2014 but please sign up NOW to host a MDOP in 2014! We will start all over with a new map and I believe “for such a time as this” – a map of the world.
TO GOD BE THE GLORY GREAT THINGS HE HATH DONE!!! I love that old hymn. And I love Isaiah 6:8 and a small part of this devotion, CALLED OF GOD, from My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers:
Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.
The CALL of God is not for the special few, it is for everyone. Whether or not I hear God’s CALL depends upon the state of my ears; and what I hear depends upon my disposition. The chosen ones are those who have come into a relationship with God through Jesus Christ whereby their disposition has been altered and their ears unstopped, and they hear the still small voice questioning all the time, “Who will go for us?” Get out of your mind the idea of expecting God to come with compulsions and pleadings. When our Lord CALLED His disciples, there was no irresistible compulsion from outside. The quiet passionate insistence of His “Follow Me” was spoken to men with every power wide awake. If we let the Spirit of God bring us face to face with God, we too shall hear something akin to what Isaiah heard, the still small voice of God; and in perfect freedom will say, “Here am I; send me.”
